Frequently Asked Questions
Who can attend?
Any child between the ages of 7 – 17 years can attend our sessions. Sometimes we may have a session geared more towards a particular age group, say 7 – 12 or 13 -17. This will be mentioned in the registration form for that session.
What does it cost?
All CoderDojo sessions are completely free to all attendees at all times.
How do I register for a session?
Does a parent need to be present?
We encourage all parents to be involved and be present at all sessions. For children 12 years and under, a parent MUST stay in the room at all times. For children 13 and above, the parent can choose to leave but it should be understood that we are in no way liable or responsible for your child.
Can my child attend any session?
Yes, any child can attend any session although some sessions may have a recommended age range. We will put out a brief description of each session on the registration page and if you are interested you can sign up. Mentors will be present to help a child start at any level.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring a laptop and power cord. You can borrow one from someone if needed. If you absolutely cannot get a laptop, please indicate that on the registration page by "buying" a loaner laptop. We will try our best to have a small number of laptops available at each session and will provide you with one when you come in.
Is any computer/programming experience required?
If you have used a computer before, you will be fine. You just need to know the basic reading and typing skills. No other computer related experience is required.
Can I bring snacks/drinks?
Yes you can bring snacks/drinks if you wish to – our host has graciously allowed this. Please be careful around equipment with food and drinks. Please be sure to clean up after yourself and encourage others to do so too.
Who are the mentors?
Our mentors are adults working in various tech fields, educators, university students and high school students. To learn about them, visit our About page. We also highly encourage peer-to-peer mentoring among all attendees.
How can I volunteer as a mentor?
We are always looking to grow our mentor pool. Please fill out the “Become A Mentor” Form on our homepage and we will get in touch with you.

How do I register for a session?
- Go to the CoderDojo community platform: https://zen.coderdojo.com.
- Click on Register link at the top right hand corner to create an account for yourself as a Parent.
- Then, you will need to join our Dojo. You can find it by clicking on the Attend a Dojo tab and searching for our Dojo. We are the Dojo labeled "Round Rock, Texas @ TechShop".
- Next, you will need to create an account for each child who will attend the Dojo. Ninjas over 13 can have their own account or a parent can create their account. These accounts will have the User type "Youth under 13" or "Youth over 13" and will be linked to the parent account.
- When a parent registers for a session, they will be able to see all the ninjas associated with their parent account and select the ones they want to register.
- The account creation is a one time activity. For subsequent session registrations a parent just needs to log in to Zen, click on Events and book tickets for themselves and their ninjas. All parents on our mailing list will receive an email informing them about a session opening up for registration. This will usually be on Sunday at 8 pm for the following Sunday's session.
